Opzegtermijn (Notice Period)
Understanding the Dutch rental term "Opzegtermijn" and what it means for tenants in the Netherlands.
Definition
The minimum period of advance notice required before either party can terminate a rental contract. For tenants the opzegtermijn is typically one calendar month (ending at the end of a month). For landlords it starts at three months and increases by one month for each year the tenant has lived in the property, up to a maximum of six months.
When You'll Encounter This
You must observe the opzegtermijn when you decide to move out, or when your landlord proposes to end the tenancy.
Example
You want to move out of your apartment at the end of March. With a one-month opzegtermijn, you must send written notice to your landlord no later than the end of February.
Practical Tip
Always send your termination notice by registered mail (aangetekende post) or ask for written confirmation via email. This creates proof of the date you gave notice, protecting you if a dispute arises.
